Nobody Taught You This withPatrick Carter

Being great at the job doesn’t automatically prepare you to lead people. Patrick Carter joins Sean M. Atkinson to explore what changes after the promotion, why management and leadership aren’t the same, and what performance numbers can miss.

Key Takeaways● Leadership is about helping individuals find their best and building teams around their strengths.● Managing systems is different from leading people; true leadership involves understanding personal and professional challenges.● Empathy, recognition, and understanding are key to effective leadership and developing others.● Failure is a valuable tool for growth if approached with maturity and curiosity.● Leaders should sell through people, leveraging their strengths and building trust.
Sound Bites● “You stop selling to people, and you learn how to sell through people.” – Patrick Carter● “You manage things and you lead people. You manage processes. You manage systems. But you lead the people.” – Patrick Carter● “Instructions are things that you follow step by step. Guidelines are me looking at you, what you need, and what brings out the best in you.” – Sean M. Atkinson● “The things that made you individually great are not what make a team collectively great.” – Patrick Carter● “My job is to take it from being a business idea to a business model to a business opportunity.” – Sean M. Patrick Carter, Founder, Edge Advantage, LLC

Patrick Carter has spent more than 35 years leading sales teams in retail and telecom, working his way from the sales floor into senior leadership roles managing multi-site regions. Along the way, he led, trained and supported hundreds of reps and leaders. Over the years he recognized the same pattern over and over: companies invest heavily in developing sales rep selling skills and product knowledge. Alternatively, relatively little is done to develop the leaders those reps report to. Great performers get promoted into leadership with no blueprint, no training, and no support - just a quota and the expectation that they'll figure it out.
That gap is what led him to found Edge Advantage Group, LLC. Through the flagship Lead Yourself™ workshop and a full development and coaching platform at EdgeAdvantage.net, Patrick works directly with frontline and mid-level leaders across industries like financial services, furniture, office equipment, and telecom. The managers who were never given the tools to lead, even though they were expected to.
Patrick is the on-camera host, curriculum author, and primary voice behind Edge Advantage's content, writing and speaking from his decades in the trenches rather than from a textbook. His approach is practical and direct: real frameworks, real conversations, and the belief that a leader can't get their team to operate at its best until they're honest about whether they're operating at theirs.
He lives and works in the New Jersey / Metro NY area with Julia, his wife of 33 years.
